A REVIEW OF THE NEW ETUDE HOUSE SOON JUNG HYDRO BARRIER CREAM FORMULA

Today we will take a deeper look at one of my favorite moisturizers in the Soon Jung line, the new and updated formula of the Etude House Soon Jung Hydro Barrier Cream. Three jars in and it is safe to say this one is probably my favorite out of the entire line now. All of the products have been formulated with skin healing and soothing ingredients such as Panthenol (promotes wound healing, reduces inflammations & improves hydration) and Madecassoside (derived from Centella Asiatica, repairs damaged skin, and soothes irritation) but this one just has my heart after they updated their formula.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON THE ETUDE'S HOUSE SOON JUNG LINE

ETUDE HOUSE came out with the Soon Jung line in 2017, the entire line was made specially for those with the most sensitive skin types. People with reactive skin, sensitive and acne prone types will especially enjoy the Soon Jung line, as it is gentle and has a minimal ingredient list with no potential irritants including artificial colors, fragrance, and parabens, and irritants.

WHAT IS THE SOON JUNG HYDRO BARRIER CREAM?

A water based cream made to heal and soothe stressed and irritated skin, while strengthening your skin barrier. This Hydro Barrier Cream is packed with 92.2% hydrating ingredients. Formulated with super hero ingredients we love like panthenol, which moisturizes, softens, and reduces stress on the skin; madecassoside, which is derived from calming centella asiatica (cica); and green tea extract, which boasts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

Free of essential oils, artificial fragrance, parabens, mineral oil, artificial color, animal products, and is vegan.

Texture: It has a lovely thick cream/gel texture that spreads very far and easily yet still feels lightweight. Less is more with this one as it spreads so beautifully and is very hydrating.

Who is it good for: dehydrated, acne prone, sensitive, combination and even dry skin types.

Side note: I have combo acne prone skin. I am always looking for a moisturizer that is very hydrating, doesn’t cause my skin to break out with acne and does not leave me looking like a greasy mess.

How to use: Gently pat on your skin before applying sunscreen in the morning and as the last step of your night routine.

INGREDIENTS WE LOVE

Panthenol: Moisturizing (penetrates deep into the layers and gets converted into Pantothenic Acid (B5)) + Possibly Anti Acne (B5) + Wound healing (‘‘Promotes skin cell proliferation’’) + Anti-inflammatory (‘‘Help reduce the appearance of UV-induced redness and may alleviate the itching associated with dermatitis.’’) + Skin barrier protection (B5 is involved in the creation of lipids, which themselves play a significant role in preventing moisture loss from the top layer of the skin)

Madecassoside: Derivative of Centella Asiatica Extract: Wound healing + hypertrophic scar healing properties + promotes collagen production (Acts as an Antioxidant). - Madecassoside can also help in burn wound healing through increasing antioxidant activity and enhancing collagen synthesis.

Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (Green tea): Antioxidant (Polyphenol) + Anti-inflammatory (Polyphenol) + Antimicrobial (Catechins)

Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract: A traditional Chinese herbal medicine loaded with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonoids such as baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin. If that would not be enough, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract is also claimed to have antimicrobial and antifungal properties (also against P.acnes and Malassezia furfur) as well as some skin-brightening activity. A multi-functional skin-good

Allantoin:  A soothing, skin-softening and protecting ingredient, it can also promote wound healing.

SO WHAT’S CHANGED IN THE SOON JUNG HYDRO BARRIER CREAM?

I have to admit, I have not tried the previous formulation as there were two ingredients that are irritating for some, and me being one of them made me avoid it. In the previous formulation the Soon Jung Hydro Barrier Cream had Bitter Orange (essential oil) and Shea Butter, both ingredients can be irritating for certain skin types. Personally, my face does not like Shea Butter as I will break out the next day. So I am extremely happy they have removed these two ingredients, removing the shea butter may have possibly changed the texture but this one has a luxurious rich creamy gel texture. They also added more gentle and soothing skin ingredients, such as Allantoin a soothing and protecting ingredient, Green Tea a soothing antioxidant and Glucose (humectant). All these changes make this moisturizer less irritating and a really great choice for sensitive skin types. Needless to say I much prefer this updated formula.

REVIEW

Personally I have been really happy using the Soon Jung Hydro Barrier Cream! I find it very soothing especially when my skin is reactive or sensitive after exfoliating and doesn’t cause my acne prone face to breakout. I’ve also found this works great under makeup and as a primer, there is no pilling at all. It can take a couple of minutes to fully absorb which I am ok with. I would have liked a pump bottle as I don’t really like using products in jars, (I worry too much about germs getting in the products) but clearly it's not a deal breaker for me as I am on my third jar.

VERDICT

If your skin is dehydrated, sensitive, combination or acne prone I’d say this is a great choice for an every day moisturizer.
