DO I REALLY NEED TO USE A TONER?

Toners are probably one of the most multi-functional, yet misunderstood steps in skincare .You can splash them on, mist them, pat them on and even make a sheet mask. So, do you really need a toner and how do you know if you should add one to your routine? Let's find out!

It's well known, in the world of K-beauty, toners are designed to prep your skin and enhance the skincare steps you already practice. Today’s toners are not harsh or stripping, while they are hydrating they aren’t meant to replace your cleanser or cream. They can increase skin's fullness, maximize hydration and soothe irritation. And they definitely don’t have to sting.

Here’s what to expect when using a toner in your routine:

A BOOST IN HYDRATION

Imagine your skin levels are like a sponge. Which will take up and hold onto more nutrition: A dry sponge or a damp sponge? This is a great way to visualize what happens to your skin.

It’s rare that one miracle product will answer all of your skin concerns. Adding a toner is a simple and highly effective way to build extra layers of hydration that the skin can grab onto all day long. You can even fine-tune this one or two applications of a toner to build that layer of hydration. Always remember, more hydration = more dewy plumpness.

A favorite is HaruHaru WONDER Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner. This black rice toner is almost like an essence, lightweight but still has some body to it. It is super soothing and hydrating. EASY EXFOLIATION

Post-cleansing and pre-treatment, some toners can provide a boost of exfoliation that can be especially beneficial for dry or sensitive skin. All skin types develop a build-up of dead skin cells and sebum that can clog pores, but not every skin type can regularly handle a chemical exfoliation or even one of the gentler manual ones. Enter exfoliating toners!

After cleansing and pre-treatment steps, some toners can give a boost of exfoliation that can be especially great for dry or sensitive skin types. We all develop a build-up of dead skin cells and sebum that clog our pores, regardless of skin type. However, not every skin type can handle a chemical or a manual exfoliator. Until they enter the magical world of gentle exfoliating toners!

Using a toner that you don’t have to wash-off can be an easy and simple way to still accomplish this important process for the skin. Something with BHA will continue working as your skin absorbs it working to dissolve anything your cleanser (or the day) left behind.

AMPLIFIED ANTI-AGING

Toners are great side-kicks to an anti-aging routine. Why? As mentioned previously, they’re great at keeping the skin hydrated, which helps it to look more plump, fuller and help reduce wrinkles and fine lines appearance. (Think about it, does your skin look older and crack more or younger when it’s too dry?) Because toners help rebalance the skin’s pH after cleansing, toners help the skin remain less stressed and irritated by the elements. Keeping inflammation and oxidation in other words healthy and robust skin… the goal of any good anti-aging routine.

Toners enhance anti-aging treatments by balancing your skin's pH and prepping your skin to better  absorb the more potent steps like serums and ampoules you’ll layer on next. Back to our sponge analogy: Dye will penetrate a damp sponge deeper than a dry one. You want your skin to absorb every drop of the superfood ingredients that you layer onto it, and toners help assist that goal. They also add in a few premium nutrients of their own. Different toners can include nourishing plant oils, fermented black rice, or even pigmentation fighting and anti-aging powerhouse Vitamin C.
